It more than met my needs. If you position the vacuum sander right below the area you're sanding with the sponge, it catches most of the dust from that process as well. If you're in the sheetrock business, you're probably better off buying one of the high dollar power units, but for a homeowner with a small to medium sized project, this tool works great. I researched vacuum assisted drywall tools and found the power assisted ones very expensive. All in all, I went from having dust all over the room to virtually no dust at all.
I was working on a medium sized two room project and was tired of getting covered with sanding dust so I read some of the reviews of this product and decided to give it a try. It is very comfortable to use and works as advertised. I knock down the bulk of the mud the this tool and keep a medium/fine sanding sponge nearby. When the surface is just about dead flat, I use the sponge to feather out the area I'm working.
The one problem with that is you can create deep grooves so be sure to adjust the amount of suction on the sander and pay attention to what you are sanding. I have used this sander on two different jobs since I bought it. The design is very good for sucking up the dust compared to the Stanley one that I bought several months back (junk). I now use this sander to sand the majority of the final coat but I do go back with a sanding block to smooth it out. The sander will stick to the wall with the amount of sucking power.
This item worked exactly as advertised and with minimal dust generated. The only drawback is that there is no extension socket so you have to use your hand.
I could not make out any dust what so ever. Truely a quality designed, built, and functioning tool. For a homeowner or even a pro I would highly recommend this. Possibly one of the best $30 tools I ever bought, well worth every cent, you could easily spend $30 on plastic film taping and sealing off a room to contain the dust. I was a little worried that I would need one of those monserous shop vacs to connect this to for it to work but I tried it out with my small portable 2gal 1.5HP wet/dry shop vac and it worked absolutely flawlessly.
No mess sanding of drywall. Only downside is handle a little ackward to hold overhead hose gets in the way. Did 3 ceilings with no dust, unless I dropped the sander.
