Cut log furniture tenons with precision accuracy every time! This router jig eliminates all the guess work and hassles. It sure beats trimming the ends of logs by hand with a pocket knife. Though I needed to vacuum this out between each tennon. I learned to remove the tennon a few times during the cut to measure. Over all I like using this for small logs for chairs and railings and small head boards. So, what are the advantages. However each removal makes the tennon a bit smaller and the joints a bit sloppier. It is accurate and can produce long tennons for inserting in the wide logs you may have to use from time to time- or for thru tennon construction. It is a noce tool and worth the price in the time is saves.
Safety goggles anda mask and a respirator are a must as are a good solid pair of gloves to hold the vibrating log. But alas it is slower and less accurate than the pencil sharpener method. The router based tennon cutter is a solid performer. It is handy for one person to use, not two like the pencil sharpener method. A note, if you are using a log wider than the tennon then trimming the end to a bevel that fits inside the tennon forming hole is a must.
However it is not large enough to accomadate large head board side logs. Another tip- to keep the shop from becoming knee deep in shavings and chips I duct taped a towel to the back side of the unit where the completed tennon exits and this cut down on the mess considerably. It is also quicker than using the drill mounted hole saw method. Also, cutting tennons to a specific length is a bit tricky since any markings you may put on the log are obscured by the top plate that holds the router and reaching around the back side to measure is a lot dangerous. My speed adjustable router shined when at half speed and cut down on excess vibration.
After a while I got the hang of it.
