The problem is that the inner ring that holds the metal strips (within the socket) is made of plastic. When you think about it, a thin plastic ring cannot handle the stress of a metal bolt which is put on tight. I went out and bought a Craftsman "Bolt-Out" bolt/nut remover set which is made entirely of metal. I purchased this set based on the premise it would remove rounded bolts. So, if you plan to use these for light duty use, then maybe these are okay but if you want a serious bolt remover consider something else.
Recently, I put it to the test and it failed MISERABLY. When I applied force on the rounded bolt using the special socket, the plastic ring twisted and came out of it's place. Not only did it not remove the bolt, but now the socket cannot be used. This set might work to remove slightly rounded off bolts but I would not recommend this product.
After cleaning the EGR valve and using a new gasket and nuts, installation was a snap due to the Grip-Tite sockets ability to hold the nut during the assembly. Great product saved me a lot of money and frustration. Fortunately, I happened to see an advert in the Lee Valley Tools catalogue showing the Grip-Tite sockets. So I ordered a set from Amazon, and a week later I received the set in the mail. With my 3/8 socket extension and 1/2 adaptor I was able to easily loosen the nuts. I was having a problem with the EGR valve on my 92 Honda Accord.
What to do. Unfortunately, Lee Valley didn't carry the metric set. Yahoo. However, there was just barely enough room to get the socket on the nut. I used a conventional socket on both nuts and ended up rounding the nuts. The Grip-Tite sockets are a little bulkier than a standard socket, so they were difficult to get in close to the nuts on the EGR valve.
This is the reason for 4 stars.
I bought a set of these to get a rounded bolt that was firmly stuck on my brake caliper on my car, as I applied pressure the internal gripping mechanism just snapped apart. I would not recommend these as upon further inspection, the grip mechanism appears to be made of cheap plastic.
These, along with Gator Grip sockets, are worth their weight in gold. One of the 3 bolts holding the hub assembly in place (besides the axle nut) became terribly rounded, and removing it seemed impossible. I bought this set at Sears when a standard hub assembly change I was attempting on my car, came to a screeching halt. After too much time trying to figure something out, and half a pack of smokes, I borrowed a car and went to the local Sears. I would have been up a creek without them. As soon as I returned home it wasn't even 2 minutes later until I had the bolt removed.
Saw this used on a tool show, and immediately bought it for my husband.but I secretly intended to use it myself. He looked at them for about an hour.held them in his hands, and FINALLY put them in his "locked" tool box. It's a terrific set of tools.and they do what they say, "Grip-Tite." After receiving this set, I also bought the standard set, and a few wrenches. I gave them to my husband for his birthday on the 4th of December.
