If you want to know how to turn a bowl - this is the DVD to own. Compared to books and DVDs by very well-known turners, this DVD really stands out as a great guide. What a refreshing instructional tool for learning bowl turning. The presenter obviously possesses great talent - but his humble teaching methodology and his real passion for sharing tips and step-by-step instruction can't be beat. KG He leaves nothing out of the instruction and takes nothing for granted as far as the viewer's previous knowledge.
Its about as close as you can get to having a mentor there.I live where there is not really anyone around to learn from and these videos make my decisions on equipment and tools much easier to make as well as showing you the proper way to work with the lathe. I purchased it with Bill Grumbines video and together there is a wealth of information on turning. This is a excellent instructional video. I have not purchased the lathe yet but wanted to learn as much as i can to make informed decisions prior to accumulatiing tools and to understand how to operate the lathe safely. There are projects included and they both are well worth the money. Both Videos are excellent in quality and instruction.
this was the perfect introduction. not only did it show me all the individual steps, in order, from start to finish, it gave me the confidence to do it. i've spent a lot of money on books and dvds. unfortunately, to a beginner he appears as a show-off. where there were many opportunities to get sidetracked; showing different techniques for forming the bottom or making different shapes of bowls - he shows you one sound way. i've been turning pens for awhile.
since i do not have access to hands-on training with someone, i had to teach myself. notably, the richard raffan series. as he says, with time, you'll develop your own style and likes. he doesn't assume you know things, he doesn't blow through any of the turning, and he talks in a manner as though he remembers how it feels to be a beginner. i was ready to take the training wheels off and start learning how to turn bowls. the bill grumbine dvd was the perfect classroom environment.
i actually feel as though i can do it which, i guess, is half the battle. rather than showing techniques and different projects, he takes it from log to bowl in its natural progression.
