User Comments about the Professional Woodworker 1/2 HP Mortise Machine

for the price this is a great buy its well built and sturdy, have not had any problems on any of my projects with this mortise machine.

This results in a very rough and not very accurate mortise. Hence alignment and glue up to the tenon is impossible. Since the bits are out of round, doing a mortise will result in the bit/wood combination smoking. I was doing some 3.5-inch through mortise and had to flip the post over to complete the cut on the other side since maximum depth is 3 inches. Useless and only good as a boat anchor.

Half horsepower my foot.Further, all the geometry is out of wack: The posts are not perpendicular to the base, neither is the fence perpendicular to the base. The stop is useless since it requires so much hand force to plunge the cutter that stop will be push down as well. Those cuts where it meet at the half way point were off by 1/8". Thinking I could do better by getting a set of new chisels and bits from Delta and Sears but none will fit this machine. First the motor has no starting torque and a little piece of wood chip stuck between the cutters prevent the drill bit from rotating even you could rotate it with your finger from the chuck.

All three bits furnished are out of round such that the boring drill head rubs hard against the chisel cutter, resulting in a very loud sound like a bad bearing going out. Too many fatal flaws, so boat anchor it is. It doesn't matter which of the three bits are used - they all smoke even after shimming the base to correct the angle to 90 degrees with respect to the posts.
