For piece of mind I decided to check for the same stud but approach it from the other side. Once safely opened, I put it to task straight away. Again, I started near to where I thought the stud would be and started sliding. Also, I found that if you place your other hand on the top of the unit whilst scanning, to try and steady the tilting issue mentioned above, then this would also affect the scan result. I have both of these so it looks like I may have to try and return this. Great, I thought. This was far messier but much faster and provided me with comfort, safe in the knowledge that I was actually hanging my precious baby on solid wood rather then weak drywall. Almost too easy.
I placed the i65 near to where I thought a stud would be (based on where an electrical outlet was) and began scanning. Some other, seperate issues I found were that the unit itself could be easily tilted in either direction whilst scanning so that it ended up not scanning flush against the wall. Can I really be bothered finding out how to return this for the sake of $30 or will I just keep it in the bottom of the toolbox. I watched the dvd that came with it to see how to use it to maximum effect - the dvd was ok but more of a gimmick than particularly useful. Not good.
This had a considerable effect on the scanning result. Unfortunately, this time the center was about four inches to the right of where the first stud was found. Before you buy this I'd suggest you check if you have thicker than normal walls and to also consider the wall texture you will be scanning. In the end I gave up on it and decided to use the old "pilot hole and coat hanger wire" method. It arrived in the usual plastic packaging, you know the type, where you have to use a sharp knife to open it and almost end up losing a digit in the process. First use picked up the edge of a stud, then the center, the laser flashed and the alarm sounded.
I was looking forward to receiving this stud finder as I've been waiting to hang my plasma on the wall for too long a time. That was so easy. SLOWLY.
Reading some of the other reviews, it looks like people have difficulty with textured walls and/or thick dry wall. Something of a necessity when living in anywhere near the San Andreas Fault. The only real thing I learnt was to 'double-click' on the button to choose a stronger scan depth.
It picked up an edge and then the center again. Each time with a different result. For the next 45 mins or so I spent time trying to find the dead center of the studs needed to hang my flat-screened behemoth.
I have owned this stud finder for years and it is a piece of junk. It would take less time and be more accurate to drill holes in my wall to find studs, fill and repaint the holes than to try and use this useless tool to find studs. Sometimes it seems to work but most of the time it does not. I can "locate" studs in a wall moving from left to right - then check my findings from right to left and I get a completely different stud pattern.
Not too consistent in readings. If I take readings about 2' higher then where it says the stud is, it sometimes is several inches off from the original reading below it. Have to go over the same spot about 3 times to get a fairly accurate idea of where the stud actually is. I am talking about smooth wallboard walls in a newer house.
Very accurate and the lcd display makes it really easy to read. While helping a friend install a flat screen tv, I borrowed this studfinder. This is the best stud finder I've ever used. Needless to say that I was so impressed, I ordered one through Amazon the following week. Best damn studfinder I've seen. I've used it to install an AC unit through the wall.
After getting numerous false and inconsistent readings, i again reviewed the instructions. The unit is probably ok for standard walls with regularly spaced studs (16"), but for a wall with irregular studs or anything unusual (which is where you really need a stud finder), it is a complete waste of money and only serves to frustrate. I cannot imagine recommending this to anyone but an enemy.THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED. After having a less expensive Zircon edge finder, i bought this center finder for putting up shelves on a drywall-on-studs wall. One of the old types which sense the drywall screws with a magnet is far superior, in the instance above, to this unit.
What a mistake. No help. The dvd isn't much better so i called Tech Support in CA. While they were polite, their suggestions were not helpful and did not include anything i hadn't already tried.
