I have only used the Bits once and at that time the results were favorable.
I bought this set mainly for the Bosch brand and the large variety of bits. We are building a house and they have gotten lots of use with no problems. I too wondered if the tip was a gimmick. It is not, the bit feeds in fast.
You actually have to pull back with a fair amount of force to stop the bit if you're not going all the way through the wood. I was wrong, they are the fastest-boring spade bits that I've ever used, by far. If these bits broke on something, I'm sure any other bit on the market would have broken also. As for the previous reviewer, old yellow pine can be VERY hard and have some pretty tough knots in it. I originally thought the threaded tips wouldn't work very well and were a bit of a gimmick. These are especially useful if you are drilling overhead or in a tight spot where you can't get much muscle behind the drill. Bosch does not make shoddy products. The bits do all the work.
I was drilling in some old pine joists when the tip jammed and broke off - this was within the first 5 mins of use. Unfortunately I can't echo the nice comment already here. I did not have good luck with these. Nice idea, but didn't work for me. I picked up this exact set at a local big box store and had to take it back the next weekend with broken bit.
Also the price is excellent. This is another excellent Bosch product. About this spade bits,I underline the TIP which is very accurate and reliable. I Recomend it. It is not easy to find this type of point in other spade bit brands.
