Both sections are divide into rows about 2" wide (though the bottom section has a large part to the right that's about 1/3 of the case but can be divided into 2-4 smaller sections). It comes with a top and bottom section that can be opened independently from each other. The little black things you see on the corners in the photos are actually "locks" that hold the case closed tightly (even on the bumpiest of journeys) and the 14.5"x11.75" lid makes for a convenient portable desk or drawing surface. When I received this case I spent 3 hours sorting my legos into it (Lego= the ultimate versatile/reusable tool in sculpting/mold making/casting process). It's made of that impact resistance ABS plastic, so I imagine it would be excellent for the kids to carry around various drawing/coloring supplies and other odds and ends. This is a great little case. It comes with a sheet of small orange and clear dividers that you can use to further compartmentalize the case. I'm thinking of buying another for sketching/cartooning supplies and possible one each for other some other creative interests. You can write on this with a permanent marker for further organizing reasons and to keep multiple cases clearly labeled.
I use the box for jewelry beads and have found it to be a very durable box for organizing beads.Breaking off all of the divider tabs is tedious but you find that with any organizer box.
