It comes unfinished and the striking end had raised end grain. It's hard to complain about a carpenter's mallet at this price. Actually, if all had gone smooth I'd give it 5 stars.I had to return the first mallet as it had many fissures and chips, but Amazon took care of the problem with no hassel. I used my stationary sander to smooth the end grain and applied two coats of polyurethane.The mallet, as it is now, would cost twice as much. Great work Amazon.The mallet quality is about what one should expect for the price.
