Then, not only did I switch out the litter, but I got a Febreeze odor remover, decided to pay an arm and a leg to replace the litter once a week going forward, contacted the company for recommendations, and looked through the reviews for advice. I (easily) scoop it out once a day, and when we have people over they comment on how there is no "cat smell." A few other things to note, though they aren't really deal breakers -- the crystal litter is a mix of blue and clear -- after the cat pees, you have a much less pretty blue and piss yellow/green mix, and since I had finished off an amazon.com giftcard purchasing the Scoopfree litter box, the selling company said they could only refund "what I had really paid" (aka not the $20 from the giftcard). Even with all that, there was very little improvement -- I still had to pull apart the litter box (not convenient).and scoop the poop every couple of days or give up the use of the first floor of the house. I was mortified at the thought of having anyone over to our house, so after three weeks, I switched back to our old basic litter box with Arm and Hammer litter. I had really high hopes for this litter box, and I went to a lot of trouble to try to make it work, but in the end, I went back to a normal litter box, and I am much happier.
The litter should have been switched out at the end of the first week, but since I was expecting it to last 4 weeks (or at the very least, 3), I stretched it to two weeks. The company that makes the litter box told me that I was obviously feeding my cat low quality food and recommended that I switch to something more expensive -- I was actually in the process of transitioning my cat to a premium cat food recommended by our vet, but I found their tone a little irritating. What sweet relief. Thankfully, amazon.com is great, and even though it was technically outside of their refund window, they agreed to a full refund when I contacted them. The main problem with this litterbox is the terrible smell which develops within days -- we have one 13 pound adult cat, and I was taking apart the box and scooping out the solid waste every two days or so to fight the terrible odor.
Looking through the reviews, I saw some posts about adding a little Arm and Hammer litter to the crystals to absorb odor, so I got some and mixed a little in. Maybe someday I will try an automatic litter box again, but it will definitely not be a ScoopFree. After about three days, again the smell was terrible -- far worse than any other regularly maintened litter box that I have ever had.
My cat took to it right away and had no problems switching from her old box of regular litter to this new box with crystals instead. I was very weary of trying automatic litter boxes since I'd heard of them having lots of mechanical problems. The cat goes in the box, and once she is out the sensor knows to sweep the crystals. If she were to go back in there during the 20 minute wait period it would reset the clock and start the countdown again once she leaves.
The crystals don't track around the house as much as the litter does. I'd say the motor isn't exactly quiet but it is not too terribly loud either.Their website has a replacement crystal try subscription service which is convenient. Very easy and very quick and MUCH MUCH cleaner than the old litter box. Best thing since sliced bread. I've had it for a month now and am soooooo happy with it. I have not even seen the poop the whole time I've had it. And no more litter dust.
They send you the replacements at whatever interval you want. But a friend was using this and highly recommended it. It waits 20 minutes and then does a full sweep forward and back pushing any "tootsie rolls" into the compartment in the front (that is covered). This is also fantastic for pregnant women who are advised not to handle dirty cat litter (due to fear of toxoplasmosis). After 3-4 weeks I replaced the bottom cartridge holding the crystals with a new one.
I feed it Nature's Balance indoor kitten formula. Just make your own. It's not worth 30 dollars a month for one cat. It poops at least once a day. All that work for 2-3 weeks. The feces builds up, and eventually falls out of the tray.
I went to Costco scavenged some cardboard and bought myself some tin foil and duck tape. That is okay, because I then use my old pooper scooper to take out all the waste (liquids and solids)into a blue waste bag for dogs. That tampon diaper in the Breeze Kitty Litter system works really well. It soaks up all the urine.They need to combine breeze with scoop-free. Breeze kitty litter was decent but you have to pick up the poop every day. I wish the crystals absorbs better.It only costs them (.). I ended up splitting the bag into two. Living in the city in a small town, it helps a lot.

Just recycle the old metal rims for the magnet. I don't see the poop, but I can still smell just a little bit when it's fresh. My cat is one year old, healthy, normal and in shape. The sand becomes soggy and my cat then refuses to use it and urinates on carpets/rugs and furniture.The reusable tray is better, but I hate all that dust that flies up when you poor it.
I have one cat, it becomes filthy at 50 rakes in one week. In conclusion for Scoop Free ultra, the sand does not soak up the urine completely, leaving it soggy. They're over charging. Urinates 5-7 times a day. to make a cartridge, and they charge us (.).
After 1.5 weeks - 2 weeks. I add 1/2 of the remaining crystal and I have an extra week. My friend has two cats and they have to switch it every 1.5 - 2 weeks.It's frustrating still. For old constipated cats, they work well.
Ricky transitioned over from regular litter to the ScoopFree Self Cleaning Liter Box and Scoop Free Crystals without any trouble at all. I find that I need to change the litter every 2.5 to 3 weeks. I purchased the "hood" accessory (helps prevent litter smell from getting out and keeps things from going inside the litter box) as well as the mat. I bought this over four years ago for our cat, Ricky, and it still works great. The litter box wasn't too challenging to assemble. It is so much better than standard litter boxes (in my opinion) just for the fact that it doesn't require cleaning too often.I really am very happy with the ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box and HIGHLY recommend it. You will want to position it in a place that is near an electrical outlet.
Anyway, this lack of odor control was singularly the most important reason why we returned this litter box.Third, the litter box did work pretty well, but I did notice that poop would occasionally get trapped halfway under the "trap door" thing that lifts up, so that a portion of the poop would be peaking out from under the trap door after the cleaning operation finished (you are welcome for that image:). This is supposed to allow the crystals more time in contact to dry out and deodorize the poop, but that didnt help. When confined to a small room, the two cats did start using the scoopfree box, but when let out, they seemed to prefer couches and the carpet (not very cool). My wife and I recently got two kittens (8mo old) who were already litter box trained, and I did tons of research on various litter boxes from the omega rolling litter box to the litter maid auto box to scoop free to litter robot to the cat genie. Also, the grate itself would sometimes (albeit rarely) get small bits of poop stuck on it, thus requiring manual cleaning of the grate.So, after trying out this litter box for like 2wks, I returned it. One possible reason is that the crystals are so large that one piece of poop would have like 10 large crystals stuck to it, but plenty of "free space" of poop open to the air as other crystals couldnt fit in the spaces (unlike clumping litter that completely coats the poop).
So thats my first point, if your cats have always used clumping litter, they may not like the transition to crystals (just like some cats dont like even the switching of brands of clumping litter).My second point is that the crystals seemed to be absolutely HORRIBLE at odor control. I thought crystals were supposed to be even better than clumping cat litter, but we could not believe how bad the smell was. I also decided to spend the money and buy the litter robot, and I am in the process of getting them transitioned to that. Not sure yet if it is good or bad, but I plan on leaving a good or bad review of it in a month or so. I then bought the cheapest walmart litter box, put in fresh step litter, and they have been using it well and there is absolutely no smell. So I dont usually write reviews, and I dont mean to completely blast this product, but I do want people to realize what they are purchasing. This is not Scoopfree's fault as the cats could have been just getting used to a new house and new box, but I also wonder if it was because they were used to the finer grain of standard clumping cat litter, and not the larger crystals.
Maybe it was the food we were using, but probably not since after we switched back to the standard litter box w/ fresh step clumping litter (about 2 wks ago), there is NO smell. I research them all. Then, to make things worse, the box would clean itself and scoop all the barely coated poop into the holding portion, and the poop would no longer be at least buried in the crystals, and instead would be in a non-airtight holding area covered by like 10 crystals. The litter robot had great reviews but was pretty darn expensive, but this Scoop free also had great reviews so I bought it.First, the scoopfree is fairly easy to set up and it looked like it worked fine. I bought the ultra scoopfree box that has the cover and changeable timer, but kept the cleaning time at 20minutes after cat entry. I will say that in terms of operation, it works pretty darn well and it ridiculously easy to set up (just set the globe on the base and run through one cycle).Anyway, hope this helps. I watched the cats and they covered up their poop completely, but that didnt seem to matter.
