This guide is OK for plane blades but it is useless for chisels because it does not hold them accurately. If you want a multi-purpose blade/chisel honing guide, look elsewhere. The grooves in the honing guide do not fit the majority of my chisels.
Does what it promises for smaller chisels and plane blades, larger ones don't fit snugly. You might want to use a longer sharpening stone because the honing guide takes up a lot of space behind the blade.
The guide seems to be well made, but does not accomodate the edge profiles of my chisels, hence the chisels wobble during honing. I don't know how one would tell if this guide fit your chisels without just trying it on the chisels to be sharpened. I plan to take the guide with me to the home center to purchase a new set of chisels that are held firmly. I need a new set anyway, but I'll have to admit that I was unhappy with this product.
After several shifts in the blade while sharpening, I got frustrated and took the thing apart for some modifications. I needed no adjustments for plane blades.Overall: 2-Stars, you get what you pay for. I have a hard time keeping a constant angle on my chisels when sharpening by hand and thought this would solve my problem and it was a fairly decent price considering some other guides on the market.The Good: Other than the price, the guide accomodates both plane knives and chisels. Want precision. It took some time to position chisels correctly, then torque down with a screwdriver. I didn't bother returning it because I was able to get some use out of it. It took a couple trial-and-error mods to get the guide to properly grab onto a chisel.
Smooth adjustment screw.The Not-so-good: My chisels have a tapered thickness from the tip to the handle but the guide does not take that into account, leaving you with a wobbly surface to try to tighten. I punched out the rail guides and used a grinder and file to make a tapered groove in the guide. get the Veritas Mk II I would never try this on a more expensive guide but I had no qualms doing it on this tool.Perhaps I just got a bad copy.
simple and easy. I like it. doesn't come with instructions but it you are playing with sharp objects, you better be able to figure it out.LOL. works better with longer chisels but worked with a 2" with the guide right below the handle.
