This is a great product and a great place to order from. It is also a great feeder if you are trying to keep your indoor cat on a diet. I got my item in a timely fashion and my cats love it. I can now work late and travel knowing that they are well fed.
I bought this because my cat is overweight and I wanted to strictly dispense food at the exact same time twice every day. Looking for another automatic feeder. On the up side I didn't have any problems with programming it or the display. The problem was that the smallest setting is 1/4 cup, but it actually was spitting out close to 1/2 a cup. This meant that my cat was getting double his food twice a day (about 1 cup of Iams).
For the first meal, hardly anything came out. I ended up returning this product because it was unreliable, and I was afraid my cats would starve while we were away. Don't waste your money on this. I bought this to feed our two cats while we were away for a couple days during the holidays. We ended up getting a $12 gravity feeding tower from Petsmart, and that worked just fine.
My husband progammed it to dispense 1/2 cup of food 3 times per day. The second meal was WAY more than 1/2 a cup. And for dinner, the dispenser kept blinking "dinner", but no food came out at all. We tried this the next day with a similar outcome.
This is a great product. It is battery operated which means you can place it anywhere and should you be gone and there is a power outage, your pet is still taken care of. I found it easy to set-up and now I don't have to worry about being home to feed my pet should I be late getting home from work or something. Plus, I can go away for a few days and not worry.
The lid to the hopper fits securely so if by chance the cats were to tip it over(which I don't think would happen), I do not think it could open up and spill. It has never jammed for me (I had Purina Diabetic DM food in it. It was very easy to set up. But, we were going to be going out of town for a night and had no one to feed our two cats. I have not had any problems with my cats getting any food out in-between feedings either. I would recommend something small like that.
I'm guessing there have been some product updates since some of those reviews. After you get it programmed and if you turn the power off, all you have to do the next time you turn it back on is reset the clock. I looked at it pretty close and your cat would have to have a very long paw and would have to curve up and around in order to get a substantial amount of food out. My cat did manage to get three kibbles out once, but I think it was food that was in-between the paddles, left over from the last feeding. One of my cats is fairly smart and has tried sticking his paw up the shoot where the food comes out, but has been unsuccessful. After reading the other reviews, I almost didn't buy the Petmate Portion Control Feeder. Unlike what some of the previous reviews said on here, the directions were extremely easy to follow.
It stores your original feeding program. The first one I bought was defective but Amazon promptly sent me a replacement with a mailing label to return the defective one. I can see how large kibble may get stuck or jammed. They sent it next business day so I was able to have it in time to test it out before we left town. The bowl is removable making cleaning easy and it is large enough for two cats to share from (I bought the 5 lb feeder). We do not use the feeder on a daily basis (we feed them soft food twice a day), but it works great for us when we are gone on overnight trips or if I just want to sleep in on a Saturday without having my cats wake me up to feed them. They are small round kibbles).
