User Comments about the Weller P2C Portasol Professional Self-Igniting Cordless Butane Solder Iron

Versatile to use as a torch to heat shrink tubing etc. This is a great tool. It heats up quikly and gets very hot. Highly recommended Does not need a cord and is much more convenient to use.

I had been faced with restoration of an Edwardian stained glass door panel where the existing solder would not melt using today's Weller 100W electric irons. One thing though, at max temp if you press too hard the tip will bend because it is so hot. The iron is simplicity to fill, start and use - but start it on full gas flow - and it works excellently. Just taken delivery of this excellent item. I bought the above because of its higher temperatures and it does the job. So far so good. Still not desperately quick but better than risking glass breakage from cutting and prising.

this is the same iron snap-on sells, but for a 1/3 of the price.must have for anyone who solders.heats up within a minute.unlike cord models that take 5-10 minutes.and its cordless.i would rate this 10 out of 10.

The only negatives I see are the relatively short run-time per tank of gas (about 45 mins on a low setting - less than they claim), and the absence of a temperature gauge, or series of led lights to roughly indicate temp. Primarily, ignition no longer requires a "bic-lighter-type-spark" (that usually required at least three efforts), as it has been replaced by a piezo-electric spark. For anyone who owned or used the original Portasol soldering iron, they will notice some vast improvements to this second design. In addition, the gas supply seems much more stable and controllable, and finally, the soldering tips are much more robust and use the same mounting device for easy switching (though one must still wait for those parts to cool down before handling). I don't think this feature is present on other, even more expensive portable units, but it would be a nice addition to ensure that expensive electronic components (esp high power LEDs) don't get fried. Overall, the tool is well-built and very quick to achieve soldering temperatures.

Being cordless it allows you to use anywhere. I am happy that I got and would tell others about it.
