I read previous reviews about a screeching sound made by the sander. He loves it. I purchased this sander for my woodworking husband. Since he has a painful nerve problem in his hands, the smoothness and lack of harsh vibrations really help. The sander we received does not have this screech. He's pitching his old Black and Decker since this one is so superior.
& speaking of pads: it's real thin. the cheap plastic base is warped. so on a flat surface only two corners are even touching the surface. I removed it. I think the warp is caused by the heavy clips that hold plain sandpaper to the pad. Then I found out why. Dewalt's supposed to have a good reputation.
I guess you can't buy this sander without the dust collection. I don't use punched paper because it tears on corners & edges. I have their biscuit cutter & it is pretty accurate. My warrantee is long gone, so I guess I'll look into replacing the base with something substantial. But this sander needs help. (but of course, the pad still has holes in it). If I break something I won't really be losing much.
Not nearly the heft or quality of my old Porter Cable which died after about 25 years.In using the sander, I found it didn't sand nearly as quickly or thoroughly as the PC.
I knew I would buy one when I could find a good deal. As others have noted, it is noisy, but the performance outweighs that in my book. with Amazon's FREE with Super Saver Shipping and wasn't expecting to receive it until the next Fri. morning. I have used a few different brands of this type of 1/4 sheet sander including a Makita that I don't like because of the way it is hard to control when I first approach a working surface of wood.
I can honestly say that after I borrowed my boyfriend's DeWalt D26441K sander, within minutes I knew I had to have one because of the smooth way it handled compared to other brands. I think I didn't find a good deal, but I think I found a GREAT deal. It took less than 3 days to get here. You can always wear earplugs. The Makita jumps uncontrollably and I have to manhandle it more than I think is necessary.
I ordered the same DeWalt model this last Sat. I can say without hesitation that this DeWalt D26441K sander is my overall personal preference. I was amazed to receive the sander Tues.
I have several other dewalt tools, and they've all been great. I expect they will out live me. They take a beating, work like a dog.and I've yet had one that quit on me.
so I love this sander because even an idiot can use it. There were no problems here. All sanders are loud (its the nature of the beast) and I'm not going to worry about its loudness. I did a little ressearch on all the sanders available and found this sander to be the best value and had the best amazon ratings so I purchased it. With this sander, I bought sandpaper at Home Depot and it took me only a minute or two to cut the sandpaper purfectly to the base of this sander. Because the base of this sander is square and not round, it will be much easier in the future to buy my own sandpaper and cut it to spec. I have read other reviews regarding the noise level of this sander and I disagree. I am more concerned of how well it works and whether it holds up over time.
I am EXTREMELY happy I did so and believe this sander to be better than the others because it allows you to buy your own sandpaper and you can cut it to the square base of this sander (other sanders have round bases which is a problem because it makes you obligated to buy THEIR sandpaper so that it will properly fit the sander. I am not a very technical person. This square based Dewalt sander does. I dont own a garage full of gadgets.
