The item uses more space than some of the fixtures would allow making it unuseable in places I had planned use these.
These kick on at dusk and turn off at dawn. As the day fades and night grows (that point where it's not quite dark) your HE bulb will only receive enough power to flicker and, after about a week or so, eventually burn out. This product works well and for around $5 you cannot beat it (see my warning below). Make sure you use bulbs greater than 25 Watts. You no longer have to worry about setting your hallway timers. So, the darker it is, the more power the bulb receives to work properly. I forget exactly how much, but the high efficiency (HE) lightbulbs didn't work well and burned out on me (and this can be expensive after a while).
I have these installed in my apartment building hallways. Excellent.WARNING: The only catch is you cannot use a light bulb that is less than 25 watts. I believe its noted in the instructions, but I learned the hard way. The light socket seems to supply power to the bulb based on the level of darkness.
Pros: This product works for me with incandescent bulbCon: The photo cell is not so accurate or sensitive. The description of the product on amazon doesn't state that you should not use florescent bulb.
Bought this item, installed it, the light stays on all the time, as mentioned by previous reviewer. The item is very cheaply made. Returned it.
My electric eye no longer worked on my lamp post. no problems. By using this it saved a costly repair. I have used it for almost a year.
