User Comments about the Zircon MultiScanner® i500 Center-Finding Stud Finder with Metal and AC Electrical Scanning and DVD How-To guide

So why do so many people find the i500 useless. You will get good results, far better than with most other studfinders I have tried. You need to calibrate the instrument (takes 2 seconds) then move it fairly slowly along the wall keeping it in contact with the wall the whole time. Personally I found the device to be excellent, accurate and gave reproducible results on both internal walls and exterior walls including where drywall was affixed to studs with concrete on the other side. I am completely bemused at why reviewers seem to be largely split into those finding the i500 useless and others finding it excellent.

Take your time. Let's assume that Zircon isn't producing 50% of these items defectively. I can only assume that they are not reading the instructions, or worse still, not watching the excellent DVD that accompanies the unit. But, the more sensitive an instrument is (and this one is very sensitive) the more careful you have to be or you will end up with erroneous answers. Finally, if your wall is covered with metallic wallpaper, or you have some other form of metallic (aluminum) foil covering one or the other side of the drywall, then you are unlikely to get decent studfinding results from any device other than an old fashioned pivoting magnet type of studfinder - and good luck with that.Zircon MultiScanner i500 Center-Finding Stud Finder with Metal and AC Electrical Scanning and DVD How-To Guide If you just slap the studfinder on the wall and wiz it along expecting to get an accurate location of a stud, pipe or electrical wire, forget it.

Occasionally it might detect one edge of stud, and hasn't yet found both edges. This could be the most useless product ever. FYI - I built these walls and know there are studs at 16" spacing, no insulation, standard sheetrock. Just purchased the Zircon Multiscanner i500. Don't waste your money.

In "Stud Scan" mode, I get a "Restart at new location" message almost all the time. Not once. In "Stud Deepscan" mode, it doesn't detect anything at all. In "AC Scan" mode I ran it all the way around a light switch and it detected nothing.

This unit works great and does what it is supposed to, without false or erratic readings. Performance can become erratic with all these devices if the battery is not up to spec. If you are getting poor readings, try a fresh, full power battery.

This stud-finder came highly recommended from a friend that's a contractor, and I've had nothing but good experiences with it. It's easy to use, accurate, and makes home improvement just that much easier. If it says there's a stud in the wall, I can be sure it's there. I've never had a problem with glitches or any of the other quirks the other reviewers point out.

The i500 claims to be able to find wiring, plumbing and of course studs. Avoid this product. After 2 housrs of trying I gave up trying to find studs through 5/8" drywall.
