Compared to height adjustment systems that can sometimes cost hundreds of dollars, this is an incredible buy. Like another reviewer, I wish Porter Cable would advertise this more, as I just happened to stumble upon it, during my research. It not only serves as a height adjustment tool, but has also made bit changing a breeze, without ever having to remove my PC 890 from the table.
The micro-calibration washer that comes with the unit isn't very useful because of slight play in the router screw drive mechanism that adjusts the bit extension. Rockler provides two holes in the aluminum insert plate that accommodate the height adjuster; one hole for the router lock clamp and one to adjust the height of the bit above the table. I use this device with a Rockler router table insert plate that replaces the Porter Cable factory base for the 980 series router. These holes line up precisely with the router's adjustment nuts. I depend, instead, on a standard caliper to get the correct bit height. I get great accuracy and plenty of control with the large height adjuster handle.
Porter Cable should advertise this item more. It performs well and is very cost effective. It provides a good alternative and simplifies use of the router table. I would not have known it was available if I had not done so much searching on the internet.
But there are no HOLES in the TABLE to pass this Adjuster through. adjuster. I just don't know if I want to drill out the table yet. I bought the P-C 891 Router and the P-C 698 Table, supposedly compatible. Actually it's not hard to reach underneath to open and close the locking lever and twist the original height adjuster.
I ordered the 75301 Height Adjuster because it looked like a great help for adjusting the motor height from above. The folks at Porter Cable admit they forgot to provide holes for the 890/891/892 router motor, and they are very nice about this, but told me yes, I really have to drill two holes in the table to use this gadget. The table comes with plenty of other holes to accomodate the attachments, motors, etc. so it seems a shame that they did not make two holes for the ht.
This product makes adjusting router height virtually effortless. No need to crawl under the table and find the adjustment screws. Insert it through one hole in the table and unlock the clamp, them insert it through the other hole and adjust the height while watching the callibrated dial rotate on the table. Then return to the first hole to lock the clamp again.
