Editorial Reviews:

This best-selling multitool has been redesigned, with larger knives, stronger pliers, longer wire cutters and all-locking blades. Manufactured from stainless steel, Wave uses a large bit driver-switch bits for more versatility, using optional bit set (Item# 199142, sold separately). Large knives with big thumbholes can be opened easily with one hand. Strong scissors can cut cloth, plastic and paper.

User Comments about the Leatherman 830040 New Wave Multi-Tool with Nylon Sheath

I deployed with this tool. It's my new favorite sidekick. This tool has just enough of what I need to do the little jobs I need it to do without all the extra, unnecessary bells and whistles.

class, or even to pick up kids at school, like I freely can with my old, smaller Leatherman.I'll be happy to change my rating if someone can turn me on to fully compatible replacement blades in a shorter size. But I reiterate, this is a very good product. Still, for me this is not causing ANY problems, just questions.I should make clear that my 4-star, not 5-star rating, is *purely subjective*, based on my strong desire for 2.5" blades most of the time. But I think Leatherman's entire line would benefit greatly if they offered some variants one could use to replace the defaults. I'll use my Leatherman anywhere from several times a day to constantly, depending on which hobby I'm working on that day. The last Leatherman I used I had for _15 years_, also stainless steel, but never, ever, had anything like rust colored spots. While this makes me question the materials used, and thus possibly the maker's honesty or accuracy in this area. I'm very pleased so far. Or perhaps someone will hit me in the head and call me ignorant - with proof.

I've had this one for several months now, and so far I like it quite well.I do find it a bit odd that there is a small rust-colored spot on one of the blades, when it is billed at "100 percent stainless steel". I will occasionally find myself attending college courses and visiting or crossing other school grounds. :) And here in California knife blade longer than 2.5" are a felony on any school grounds without prior official permission. So as great as this Leatherman is in an absolute sense, I'm simply not able to casually take it with me to my machining (.).

The tool arrived on time and appears to be very high quality. I have not used it, rather I keep it in my car in case its needed when traveling.

I primarily use the serrated blade, the large screwdriver, and the pliers. I have a big black blood blister on my hand right now from when it pinched me real good two weeks ago. I also sometimes use the tool as a hammer.I do not like its tendency to corrode. I almost never use the straight blade, the file, the saw, the bottle opener, or the tiny screwdriver.

I almost threw the tool in the water I was so mad.My brother-in-law has a Gerber and the pliers function seems very nice on that tool. The tool's bulk does not bother me and I think it necessary to make decent handles for the pliers. It also has a tendency to slip off whatever I'm trying to grip (not just related to the oil). I had an earlier model in my abandon ship bag and after several years it became a solid piece of rust. It is difficult to use one-handed because it is either stiff or oily. I wear my leatherman using the optional belt clip and use it hourly when I'm on my boat.

I have the optional bits and the nylon sheath, but have never used them.I like the locking knife blades, that they're on the outside, and that I can open them one-handed. I've owned my current tool for about 4 months and it has little spots of rust all over it and it is getting difficult to open. The worst part is that if I grip the plier handles too close to the neck, when the nose slips off the nut, the palm of my hand near my index finger gets pinched HARD between the backs of the saw and the straight blade. The tool is uncomfortable in my hands when gripping it since it has rather hard edges. I occasionally use the phillips bit in the bit driver, the ruler, and the wire cutters. I've taken to oiling it, but now it is oily.

The handles were more comfortable and the neck was spring-loaded to make one-handed use easier. I do not like the pliers function.

With all the different models Leatherman makes I'm sure there is a left-handed version. I went with this one and am not dissapointed. There are so many different versions of the leatherman that I wasn't sure which one to get and what the differences were exactly. It has everything you could need and is made well. One note - I am left-handed and the blade for the main knife on this tool is setup for a right hander. I'm going to see if I can take the tool apart and flip the knife over so the blade edge is on the right side for me, but if you are left-handed and haven't purchased yet, see if you can find a left-handed version of this tool before you buy. I didn't realize this until I was out backpacking and cut myself pretty good because, like an idiot, was cutting towards myself due to the edge of the blade being on the wrong side for me.
