I do this sometimes when I don't have time to change the filter and clean the water fountain, but I clean and change it as close to once a week as possible. I use Petmate Fresh Flow filters, but have to change them more often than the recommended month, because I have three cats. I'm sure they last longer for only one pet. Again, with only one pet, this probably wouldn't be necessary. They can also be removed, after turning off the water filter, and rinsed well then re-inserted.
good replacement for the original filters, and it helps the water stay fresh and increase the flow of water after it was very poor when the old filter is full of dirt
