I bought this unit because we had to core drill over 100 holes in our floor and the engineer didn't want us hitting any re-bar. It also picked up a lot of "stuff" in one area and when we drilled there wasn't anything there.Over all I'd give it 3 stars, maybe if it were just a concrete slab over dirt with re-bar it would be better. The floor we had to drill through was 5" thick with a metal pan under it, so I knew it would be hard for any detector to distinguish between the metal pan and the re-bar. It seemed to get it right sometimes and other times it would miss re-bar.
You're never sure about whether or not these stud-finders will actually find them, but this one does, and it does it perfectly. Great product. It's accurate, good quality, and is easy to read with the large, detailed screen.
I have performed structural inspections on over 8,000 homes with concrete slab foundations. All Of my inspectors have used the MT-6 instrument for several years with good success and satisfaction. I have used very expensive and very inexpensive metal detectors over the years in my effort to determine how slabs are reinforced and to accurately locate the rebar. The Zircon MT-6 is the best instrument for the price that I have found to perform these tasks.
On Concrete foundation, the scanner always beep when the find any rock with iron - false reading. I do not like the product but if you must have it, make sure check the return policy. Any body guest where the rebar is. However, on CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) it works a bit better.
