In recent years, rotary cutout tools have soared in popularity, due mainly to a series of television infomercials promoting one brand. Though it doesn't receive the TV airplay of its main competitor, this DeWalt model uses a durable 5 amp motor--the most powerful motor yet in a cutout tool--making it a great tool for professional drywallers, electricians, and carpenters. To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. In fact, this tool has more power than you'd expect from something of its size, and if you aren't paying attention, it can get away from you--an easier to live with problem than lack of power. Some extraordinary claims have been made about rotary cutout tools, and while DeWalt's cutout tool is as versatile as any we've tried, and a bit more powerful than most, it's most effective at what it was designed for--quick cutouts in drywall, tile, and plywood. --Brian Trinen

I bought this tool instead of a Rotozip after reading the reviews with high hopes. I was expecting to use it for many other cutting jobs, but so far have only used it once in a non-occupied house and still needed to vacuum and dust everything off. Well, I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of attachments the DeWalt tool has when compared to Rotozip or Dremel. For a cut-out tool it also generates a tremendous amount of dust, so it can't be used in a finished house without plastic partitions to seal off the area.
I got this kit, and wow, it works well. However, cutting holes in the drywall ceilings produced a lot of dust, much of which was blown into the air, despite drop clothes.Overall, I'm definitely happy with the too, but as other reviewers have commented, it does create a lot of dust at times. I used it on wood as well as drywall.Cutting the holes in the wood worked well, and there was definitely some sawdust to vacuum up afterwards, but not to bad.
I purchased this tool because my roto zip cut-out tool would no longer work. This tool works much better that the roto zip cut-out tool and I am very pleases with its performance. I am a believer in Dewalt tools and have a considerable number of them.
I purchased this tool for use as a high speed spindle on a cnc mill. It has performed very well and has no detectable play in the work that I am doing with it, milling PCBs
I have used mine to cut drywall, plaster, wood, plastic and even old window putty (glazing compound). The handle and guides in the kit just add to the ease of use in specific applications. The 'bump off' switch is a great feature as you can turn the tool off and lay it down with one hand. This is a smooth powerful and rugged tool. I have used it overhead to 'chase' cracks in plaster so I could repair them with Durabond. If you're looking for a rotary saw, you will be happy with this fine tool. Even in this very dusty application, the tool has given me zero problems.
