When driving many screws (10s, but not 100s) the exhaust air gets noticeably hot, enough so that I explicitly let it cool off. I have not really asked it to do heavy-duty remodeling or contractor-level work, but in comparison to a Craftsman, it is holding up *much* better. I've owned a copy of this drill for a few years now, and it's held up pretty well. Bearing and gear noise are about the same as when new. That said, though, it's been good enough that I got a pair for my father for Christmas, and he uses tools _hard_. (whereas the Craftsman is obviously galling its bearings).
I removed all the broken bits and put the drill together again without a replacement plastic fan blade. My Makita 6408 drill has been used for household projects for several years. It has a very nice feel to it and has functioned very well.Recently, while using the drill the plastic cooling fan blade inside the drill shattered into three pieces. I am assuming the drill will function fine as long as I don't use it for prolonged periods of time. But now I regard it as a light duty drill only and wish it had not broken in the first place. A replacement for this part (part 11 on the Makita exploded parts drawing) is not available for sale separately and presumably must be replaced by installing an entirely new armature assembly that has a part cost approximately 2/3 the value of a new drill.
Very quiet and smnooth running drill. Very good power for a high RPM drill. Recently used w/ wire brushes to remove rust from cental A/C compressor fan cover.Worked very well in that application. High speed w/ the brushes resulted in rapid rust removal.Drill is well balanced.
Excellent drill.I bought this to use on an as-needed basis and ended up using it a whole lot.It is really well built and worth the little bit more that you might spend versus a competitor.Just get it. Very handy tool. and hang shelves, adjust everything, install an A/C, build something from random Home Depot parts. whatever.
After clamping the broken end of the chuck in a vise, I was able to apply enough force to the gear to unscrew the shaft from the chuck. After breaking the keyless chuck (don't ask). I too was stumped as to how to remove it. A new replacement chuck screws back on the same way. This is a great drill and I'm very pleased with it's performance. I finally decided I had nothing to lose by taking the drill apart.
