Editorial Reviews:

JET's planer/molder handles material up to 13 inches wide and up to 6 inches in height. The tool's 1-1/2-horse, 110-volt motor (you can easily rewire it to 230 volts) spins the three-knife cutterhead. Depending on the application, the machine runs 10 to 20 board feet per minute. The motor is fan-cooled and enclosed, too, so it doesn't overheat and stays protected from dust. The cast-iron table lends plenty of heft and contact surface, while the rubberized infeed and outfeed rollers support the work without marring it. As is standard with most planers, it comes with an incorporated dust chute--so it's simple to hook up to a dust collector and keep the shop clean. Four lockable casters (not standard) make it easy to maneuver the tool in a tight shop. For people working in home restoration, this tool is a godsend. To match new replacement molding with the existing material, copy the profile of the existing molding, get custom knives made, and cut your own replacement. A helpful video is included that walks you through the process of changing and setting blades. This is unquestionably a solid tool, ideal for home woodworkers looking to step up from a benchtop unit, and especially for remodelers and This Old House-type guys who need an good way to accurately match existing trim. --Jon Groebner

User Comments about the JET 708524 JPM-13CS 13-Inch 1-1/2-Horsepower Planer/Molder, 110/230-Volt 1-Phase

works well, caution., unless you have the dust collector, which must be very large (i am resawing lumber fron a job, then surfacing) do not use the exhaust shoot, it will plug up. not sure about open cabinet, probably works well also. would have liked to get something around 24" wide, but that for me would not have been able to, dollars not the issue just noise and a large and noisy dust collector. was looking at smaller ones, a fraction of the price, decided what the heck. leave off and let the chips fly. would not go any smaller. chose for power capabilities and board size.

While I could use 220v, I use it as 110v and the planer has all the power needed that suits my purposes. I checked out the other brands before I purchased, including the bench top models, reading all the reviews here on Amazon, other web sites and at Fine Woodworking. I went with the Jet 708524 JPM-13CS. This planer is very well built and sits on a sturdy stand. (I put the model so there is no confusion) For just a little more money you take a giant step up. with the shipping included. I am pleased with the planer.

It assembled easily and was up and running in about 1/2 hour. The wheels on it allow it to be moved around as needed in my shop on the rare occasion this is necessary. I build decorative wood boxes and some easy-to-build furniture. This is a very good mid quality and price planer. I have been using it daily now for over a month. It is exact and powerful. I am glad I purchased it recommend it and would buy again.

The in-feed and out-feed roller tables are fully adjustable and reduce, if not eliminate the snipe completely. With a rebate I payed $[.].

The biggest gripe I have is with the old fashion wedge system of securing the blades which takes me about 20 to 30 minutes to do (the Delta spring loaded system takes about 5 minutes). I purchased my Jet 13" Planer/Molder at a trade show for $695 in 1997. I previously used a 12" Delta for my furniture and finished carpentry work. For some reason I haven't bonded with it after 10 years. I guess I'm going to give it another chance since my Delta fell off the table onto a concrete floor. I haven't got it out of the 10fpm mode because it seems like it was going to stall in some oak and hickory lumber even at a light setting.

Much more pleasant to use now since I have 80% less mess to clean up. Finally, JET should supply the set-up/gauge blocks for this machine. The rollers although neat and useful in their own way don't really give enough support to take care of the snipe. As of now you gotta unscrew a few screws but is that even a really big deal. I suppose I lucked out when I searched [.].

This combined with a vacuum system will virtually eliminate chips/dust. Additionally, I suggest cutting a piece of plywood 13"x48" to all but eliminate the dreaded SNIPE. Secondly the video should be DVD not VHS, who still watches those. If they supplied them wouldn't that take out the possible error of making them yourself to gauge the roller to knife offset. When you use this tool, deffinately lower the flange of the dust chute and close the gap between the orange plate and the knife blades.

This board needs to be clamped to the tool bed and thus allows for a longer support. Just my.02 worth'Jimmy T. The only real improvements in my opinion would be to make a quick disconnect for the dust chute/top cover to allow for easier on/off needs.

I planed about 150 feet of american cherry and brazilian cherry. My guess is that certain wood characteristics come together on a piece of wood to make it more prevalent, but it can be eliminated. The 3 inches of snipe others commented on can be eliminated by properly supporting on in feed and out feed. This is the third time they have done this for me. I just bought this at local wood hobby store, initials WC.

I did have 1 or 2 runs with some snipe throughout the piece, but I just continued to run it through with nominal cuts and it was eliminated. Their price was $800; I called on phone and asked if any coupons were out that I should be aware of, and the manager yelled at the salesman to honor a 10% coupon coming out in late July. This unit works GREAT. Highly recommend this unit. Other than adjusting the rollers, it worked just fine with no adjustments.
