I have a custom cabinet business; have had my "Used" Starretts that I bought 2nd or 10th hand (you choose)some 17 years ago; inherrited a 9" combo from my grandfather-in-law (who was a tool and die maker during the depression) and it's still as accurate as my others; I use them to check accuracy of the cheaper "engineer's squares" (though, who would dare use one if they have a Starrett); and have NEVER bought a brand spankin' new one, as these are all I need. You'll use that even more because it fits in your pocket). Why did I spring for one. Countless errors later after using my "hardware store" Home Cheapo type, I decided I'd like to keep what little hair I have left.Reach for no other, because there simply is no other.(By the way, GET the 4 inch.
As always, products from Starrett are excellent and dead accurate. I have cheap ones and they are not reliable as I learned the hard way. Save you money on buying the cheap ones and spend a little more to get one you can trust.
Cast set tends to chip or crack when dropped. Starrett is simply the best in American tools. I was leary about buying from Amazon.com because of how much lower the price is from everywhere else on the web and in stores $230 is what this set goes for elsewhere, so the $183 price tag is a bargain. The free shipping got it here in 2 days, honestly sounds too good to be true, but I cant stress enough how happy I am with the product and the website. Definetly get the forged steel set(which is what this is) over the cast set.
My son is a double major in applied math and aerospace engineering; he is now the captain of the university's Aero team and builds planes that have won 1st or 2nd place for 3 years in a row. Thanks. He needs high precision tools to compete at this level and said this is the only one for him.It arrived on time and in perfect condition.
