I had ordered the PL200 stair wizard from Wheaton Tools, and I wasnt sent what was shown in the advertisement picture. It was stated that it was made out of metal, when in fact the tool I recieved was made out of wood and is pretty flimsy.
Makes doing stairs a breeze, probably cuts your time on the project by 2/3. I have made and used many jigs including the portacable version of the wheaton. I have been in the building and woodworking industry for about 30 years. The wheaton is a fantastic jig, it does everything expected and is very well built. Amazon has also been a pleasure to deal with, my product was shipped and recieved as promised. The price is also great for a product of this caliper.
But, alas, it was the right tool. I ordered the wheaton Tools PL200 Stair Wizard and expected to get an inexpensive tool that would do the job for me. After just a few days I received what I can oly describe as a high quality "upgraded" tool than what I expected. Very pleasently surprised with the quality and the quick receipt of the tool. In fact I thought that they sent me the wrong tool.
They wanted their stairs to match. After gluing oak bull nose to pieces of laminate flooring, I traced the lines from the "Wizard." After cutting on the outside of the traces I used a belt sander to smooth the edges down to the inside of the trace. Risers were much easier but the technique of trimming down to the inside of the trace was the same. I'm a retired guy, never a carpenter, but this tool enabled me to put beautiful, custom-fitted risers and steps onto two sets of carpeted stairways. EACH step fit perfectly.
In both cases, our children were putting laminate wood flooring onto both floors of their homes. Tore off the carpet, cut off stair leading edges, then used the "Wizard" to create tight fitting risers and stairs. I couldn't believe the fit. Believe me, there are no two risers or stairs with the same angles or dimensions.
In a world of cheap mass produced throw away tools it was amazing to open that box and find a quality crafted tool that has the potential to be passed on for generations. Beautifully stained hardwood,I don't know whether to use it or hang it on a wall.
