The one recommendation I could find outside Amazon put this vise at the top of the list for this type of vise. Also, before the vise arrived I was completing the plans for the bench. Short of wastefully packing it in a huge box surrounded by packing peanuts or nestled in big pieces of styrofoam, I can't imagine how you would somehow increase the odds that this product would safely survive the journey from Amazon to a customer's home. I was not disappointed. If the vise had somehow been damaged in transit, I'd be upset with the carrier who delivered it, not with Amazon and the manufacturer.
I'm sure I'd be upset if my vise was damaged when it arrived, but I wouldn't blame Amazon or the manufacturer. You don't get that kind of service from the Asian companies that now make most other vises of this type. My vise was appropriately packaged in a box that fit it well with cardboard inserted between the closed jaws to prevent them from damaging each other during transit. I ordered this vise for a new workbench I am building for my shop. The vise is clearly well-made and is very well aligned. I needed some measurements for the installation and could not find them anywhere. This thing is 36 pounds of heavy cast iron and steel. Some of the folks who rated this vise poorly did so based on perceived issues with the shipping and packaging.
I noticed some disparity in the reviews on Amazon but decided to order this vise anyway. I contacted the manufacturer, and they immediately e-mailed me the dimensions I needed plus the installation instructions and the installation template. It would take some pretty serious mishandling to damage this item.I highly recommend this product. One final note.
The slight toe angle of the front and back faces are just right for a vise of this mass. The fit and finish of my vise was first-rate. Whatever problems existed in the past with poor fit and finish and alignment, they seemed to be worked out quite nicely. I've owned this vise for over six months and use it regularly. It has an excellent quick release feature that allows you to quickly move the front face forward or backward to the approximate location you need, and with a few turns of the handle gentley but powerfully clamp an item. It has a built-in steel benchdog which is rock-solid. Best of all, this vise is manufactured right here in America. I have no reservations recommending this vise to anyone looking for a quality vise that can outlast several generations.
It is a very powerful vise, but works more like a precision instrument. I had no problems with the wooden handles. Its American manufacturing the way it was meant to be. In fact, the ergonomics and warmth of wood handles over metal are a nice feature of this vise that I wouldn't want to do without.
I was a little concerned considering the vise was poorly packed in its box and after reading past reviews about this product. But the vise was ok and is now mounted to my bench doing quite well.
Nice Vice. Did not come with installation instructions but I figured it out with out too much trouble. Fast delivery.
I set it up fairly quickly and fashioned a set of maple jaws to cover the metal surfaces and protect my work. The castings are of generally good quality with smooth, unwarped surfaces and free of cracks and defects. I found it easier to remove the cotter pin, disassemble the vise, and use the actual yoke to establish the screw locations. Also, all the bearing, machined surfaces on the vise, including the face plates, the rods and the main screw shaft, are covered with a thin, oily, anti-rust material which is black, and gets all over everything. This is very annoying when you think you have it all set to mount, you hoist the VERY HEAVY vise up against your bench, and the screw holes don't line up. The Jorgensen 10" woodworking vise is a solidly made tool. The rapid release mechanism works very well, and the action is very smooth and relatively free of slop.A few minor gripes, well maybe not so minor. I know this is probably necessary, but does it need to be BLACK.All-in-all, a good product. The provided template was off by at least 1/8" on the front screw placement.
