I refinished a 60 year-old maple rocking chair and used the multimaster to sand in between the rungs of the chair on the seat and under the arms of the chair. The finish on the rocker was heavily damaged but when I used 220 grit sandpaper off I somewhat wrecked the pad. I also like the clip and rubber accessories for sanding molding but this is another topic. The dust removal worked quite well but I have some pointers to help you.1. I used the clip on this accessory with long pieces of sand paper held by one side with the sander and one side in my hand to sand the rungs.
I believe that the air that moves through the shop vac is used to cool the shopvac's motor (it is a Sears 16 gallon model).Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. I turned down the speed of the multimaster and tested in another area of the pad but it was getting too hot also. I bought another coupler for my shopvac hose and drilled a hole in the side of the coupler to enable more air to move through the hose. I have used this product on one project so far. I recommend using coarser sand-paper than you might normally use to take old finish off. I tested a small corner of the pad with a light touch on the finish but the finish gummed up and got hot. The sander is very speedy, reasonably economical on sandpaper, and I did not have any trouble with the pad delaminating as another person reported. My shopvac overheated after a few minutes because not enough air was moving through it while attached to the Multimaster.
I quickly got a lot of detail sanding done by machine that I would have formally done by hand. This heat melted the hooks on one 5/16 x 5/16 corner-point of the pad but did not render the pad unusable. This worked well but the calluses on my thumb and finger were removed so be sure to wear a cheap glove on one hand if you use this technique. I had to use 120 grit sandpaper with a very light touch to avoid heating the sandpaper and pad.2.
The second pad worked much better, but after a short time (30 minutes) a corner started separating from the medal base. Had a lot of sanding to complete, therefore purchased the twin pack. One of the pads did not hold the sandpaper at all. Since I still have a lot of sanding left to complete, I need to purchase additional pads to complete the job. The "velco" did not stick, making the pad worthless.
