User Comments about the Build Your Own Kitchen Cabinets (Popular Woodworking)

I applied the same techniques described in the book. For example, he only shows one hinge system. Overall the book was really helpful to me. Still, this is hardly a show-stopper. I used the book to guide me in building 3 large cabinets (30" W x 18" D x 76" H) for my garage. My material costs for all three cabinets was less than $400.The author does repeat himself a little but the book's highly methodical approach is very useful to me in providing: - helpful material selection tips - excellent guidance on standard cabinet sizing - superb material cutting & parts labeling system - method for constructing & installing the cabinetsI gave the book 4.5 not 5 stars because the author concentrated only on his style of cabinet construction. My cabinets came out great.

Easy to understand for any level DIY'er and provides lots of tips to make the work less troublesome. However, I used 3/4" MDF for the cabinet carcass instead of the 5/8" particle board indicated by the author, used poplar for my face-frames and door-frames, and used 1/2" overlap hinges instead of the hidden euro-hinges. To help me fill in the book's blind spots, I found these other sources to be good references:(1) Quick & Easy Custom Cabinets by Anthony Guidice(2) Building Doors & Drawers by Andy RaeOn the flip side of the above, the following refernce was not very helpful - Designing & Building CabinetsGood luck to all. and are a tasteful addition to my garage.

However, I did not expect this book to be about particle board boxes with hardwood face frames and panel doors, but that is just about all I found in it. I'm a firm believer in using the right tool for the job, and this may not be the right "tool" for your project. As other reviewers have mentioned, look for Udo Schmidt's Building Kitchen Cabinets. I wouldn't call the book worthless, as I have used it several times as a reference guide for dimensions and things of that nature while building my first set of cabinets. If you are looking to build cheap cabinets quickly, you may find this book to be quite helpful. caveat emptor, as always.-E If you want to build high-end cabinets at a fraction of the cost, this is not the book for you.

My husband and I are remodeling our dining room and kitchen This book is great for anyone who has not done a lot of wood working.

Written more as this-is-how-I-do-it book but the ideas definitely make it worth the price of the book and the time to read it.

Proulx has a system that works, and he includes cut sheets, cutting lists, and all kinds of stuff to make this an easy process for his readers. In my opinion, particle board and MDF will outlast most people, or at least outlast their ability to live with a given style. If you feel as I do that MDF and such make excellent cabinets, then this book is for you. For those wanting to build their own kitchen cabinets, this is an excellent book. It should be pointed out that this book tells you what you need to know and no more, so it is not the first or the last word on the subject, but it may be the only book you will need. I am more interested in built ins, but this is the book for me.
