I have always loved Gorey's work, but The Curious Sofa is probably my favorite. It is funny and twisted and everything you would expect from Gorey, and it made me laugh out loud throughout.
The sofa isn't very curious and the story isn't pornographic, but it's an interesting little book from Gorey. Only for die-hard fans.
Whether or not The Curious Sofa succeeds will depend entirely upon your own imagination. For a book of so few pages, there is so much to discuss. How does one play Thumbfumble. Smirk, guess, and giggle. What do adults get up to when their parents aren't around. Reread and fish for new possibilities. They are unspeakable because our author, Edward Gorey, only suggests what may or may not be occurring. Is the sofa really all THAT terrible.Share this book with a friend. What are Scylla's anatomical peculiarities.
Here in the land of the well-endowed a cast of wanton and wayward characters will involve themselves in a series of unspeakable adventures. How is is that the colonel and his wife are both missing their left legs. Amuse yourself with a book that far exceeds its monetary value. Is Gerald psychotic or is he suffering from temporary insanity.
There'd just be that question of why people were having a party naked (although cleverly covered by way the author's own unique sense of arrangement). By the end I was terrified. Well honestly, I fully enjoyed where the book allowed my imagination to roam, until the very end. I guess Gorey really has a knack at providing us with doorways into our own minds. Truely a book any Gorey lover MUST add to their collection. Also, I suppose a child could read this and still have no idea what the hell was going on (who does know).
.with a large splash of innuendo, this book has content that is more adult in nature, but still clever and amusing - although those who buy it because of the title will be disappointed.
